The National Joint Registry (NJR) monitors the UK wide performance of consultant surgeons and related hospitals, who carry out all types of joint replacement surgery. Details of current and longer term surgical activity are provided
This includes information about patients, risk levels and the quality of implants used. The NJR also gather patient reported outcomes (PROMs) data for commonly performed procedures, such as hip and knee replacements. You can visit:
In addition to this nationally mandated data, Auld Orthopaedics uses an online monitoring programme of all surgical patients to allow long term follow up. The system (Amplitude Pro One) uses the patient’s email address to contact them annually.
Information is gathered on functional outcome relating to activity, pain and general health. This allows feedback to the surgical team, enabling early recall for clinical review if the patient has any concerns in the years following their surgery.
Proven Techniques and Treatments
Ensuring that the surgeon you choose provides current, effective treatment is important. Part of trusting them and knowing that you will be supported in the right way, as you should be by the hospital they choose.
The Private Healthcare Information Network (PHIN) independently collates data on facilities offering private treatment. This includes patient reaction and the Care Quality Commission's rating. You can see the:
PHIN also carry core details for consultants, as do the General Medical Council. Your own judgement will count for much but there is no reason a good surgeon would not wish to share performance data and professional details.
Patient Reviews
The quality of reviews published on websites can vary, as they may show bias when compared to real data.
A few medical websites make an effort to collect more objective patient feedback regarding their surgeon and the hospital concerned, both positive and negative, along with verifying those posting the reviews. We have a number of reviews on I Want Great Care.
Patients also choose to write, or email us directly with their views on treatment and may agree to be named:
